Quantity in Infant-directed Speech
This paper reports on an investigation of how the phonological rule of the complementary relationship between vowel and consonant duration is manifested in Swedish infant-directed speech (IDS), as compared to adult-directed speech (ADS). Cross-linguistic investigations indicate that vowels tend to be prolonged in speech directed to infants. In contrast, there are signs that consonants may be sh...
متن کاملCategorization of Infant-Directed Speech
that adult caregivers begin talking to infants during the newborn period and continue this form of interaction throughout the infancy period. Caregivers engage in these interactions even though young infants themselves can neither reciprocate with language nor comprehend the language that they hear. The type of language adults produce when talking to infants has been labeled infant-directed (ID...
متن کاملConsonant specification in infant-directed speech
Voice Onset Time in voiceless and voiced stops in Swedish infant-directed speech (IDS) to 3-month-olds are significantly shorter than in adult-directed speech (ADS). It is hypothesized that such consonant under-specifications to young infants are changed to be overspecifications in IDS to 11-14 months old infants, according to a model of how segmental and suprasegmental phonetic aspects are cha...
متن کاملAssessing F0 patterns in infant-directed speech:
This paper reports an attempt to detect possible regularities in the patterns of F0contours typically occurring in infant-directed speech (IDS). Since 8-months old infants can detect syllable-like structures on the basis of their transitional probabilities (Saffran, Aslin, & Newport, 1996) and also show a general preference for F0 modulations characteristic of infant-directed speech, potentiall...
متن کاملTone hyperarticulation in Cantonese infant-directed speech
There is extensive evidence for vowel hyperarticulation in infant-directed speech (IDS) [1, 2, 3], but little is known about lexical tones in tonal IDS. Here, longitudinal recordings of Cantonese IDS revealed that tones, like vowels, are hyperarticulated. Implications of this finding for infant linguistic development are discussed.
